Comes from the Irish. In Irish 'smidirin' means 'fragment.' (with an English plural s)

It dates to 1829.
It may not come *from* the Irish. "Smidirin" may be from "smithereens" instead. Which came first isn't known. The "-een" ending, however, is distinctly Irish, so there is an Irish connection somewhere. |
