Funny thing, sneezing.

1 Yanks say "achoo"; we say "atishoo".

2 There is no Latin word for sneeze. (The Latin translator of Winnie-the-Pooh had to invent one).

And that, I'm afraid, is all I have time to contribute to the world of words for now. V, v busy and too many THINGS keep interrupting my life.

However, what it's lacked in quantity, I KNOW it's made up for in quality.

In my usual enthusiasm for posting, I omitted the word "onomatopoeic". As Ozzie's post shows, there is no Latin word to represent the sound of the sneeze, nor is there, to the best of my knowledge, a Latin word for the noun, "sneeze", which is not adequately reflected in the gerundive form of sternuo.

And in your usual enthusiasm for correcting my posts, you quite correctly took my comments literally, without referring to the context of the "Winnie The Pooh" citation. Thank you for your timely intervention. I and countless Classics scholars will also be gratified to know that Messrs Lewis and Short were in complete agreement on the contents of their dictionary.

I stand corrected. Graciously, as ever.
