The term "rounders" arises in England, particularly in the west in the early 1800s. The earliest citation is from the 1820s. There was also in New England at about the same time the term "round ball". There is the pattern of Rugby football>rugger and Association football>soccer, so I wonder if this is a similar transformation: round ball>rounder(s). How old is this pattern in British English, and need I worry about that intrusive /s/?
Another term used within this family of games is "town ball". I have citations for it from the 1840s in various parts of the U.S., particularly Pennsylvania and the Ohio valley. The OED1 has no entry for it, or if it does my OED-fu is not up to the task. Does the current OED have anything?
