Is the Hebrew word that is translated as Ark (meaning a boat) in the Noah story the same as the Hebrew word that is translated as Ark elsewhere (meaning a treasure chest)? Is this use of that Hebrew word to mean boat unique to that context? Is it a kind of metaphor, in which God is highlighting how precious the cargo is? |

Yes they are the same. As is the reed thingy that the baby Moses was placed into.
Exodus 2:3:Also the "Ark of the covenant" in Exodus 25:10 And more to your point, treasure chest 2 Kings 12:10,11 and even coffin for Joseph Gen 50:26 Reb Wlm will have to answer your good question about the metaphor. Or Lionello. Is "Ark" (arown) now used to mean boat in Hebrew? |

My understanding is that the implication was that Noah's ark was a rather boxy affair, not necessarily even boat-shaped. The specifications are pretty minimal, but certainly could be taken as describing a rectangular parallelepiped: "Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it." (KJV).

That image of gopherwood always brought a chipmunk to my mind when I was young. Older and (a little) wiser now I know that the Hebrew gofer (perhaps meaning the cypress, according to Etymology Online) and the animal are birds of a different feather. The latter (Etym. Online again) is 1812, Amer.Eng., perhaps an Anglicization of Louisiana Fr. gaufre "honeycomb, waffle," said to have been used by Fr. settlers of small mammals on analogy of the structure of their burrows, from O.Fr. gaufre, of Frank. origin.
